An excerpt from my journal:
"Skills that I developed during my FSM rotations include how to work with a diverse staff. At Jones Day, all the non-management staff was either black or Hispanic, with one lady who whose English was poor. Despite having an all white management staff, I felt like their team was well connected and I was also able to connect will because of purposeful openness, honesty, humility, and a willingness to learn from the long-term staff members. I found that it was important to respect the staff and their methods of doing their jobs and rather than say, ‘you should do this,’ ask ‘how did you choose to do this that way, or have you ever considered doing this?’ Because of potential racial issues and accusations, it is important to be cautious with how an all white management works with a diverse staff, yet this does not mean that the management need become powerless in fear of racial disputes." |
